A New Approach to Gear Tooth Root Stresses

Abstract: Observed root stresses and crack initiation points on high strength toothforms were found to be inconsistent with the predictions of conventional bending beam theory. Alternative stressing methods have been used and a new simple model offers a better understanding of the observed results. However, high strength toothforms require a greater knowledge of the material fatigue properties than has hitherto been considered necessary; failures are not always associated with maximum tensile stresses.
