Abstract: Offshore pipelines have been installed for a period of some 10 to 20 years using a variety of methods. This paper presents a new analysis method for the optimization of certain operation parameters in laying continuous pipe under tension from a barge. This method of optimization is now being used by one of the major offshore contractors. The solution is given by matching geometrical parameters through graphical overlays of network charts obtained by a computerized finite-element iterative solution. The solution is based on the requirement that the tension level be optimized with respect to either the minimum stinger length or the maximum average radius of curvature of the stinger.
