Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the dynamic behavior of a simple pneumatic pressure reducer. Both the nonlinear and the linearized problems were studied. Some experimental results also were obtained on a working reducer model to check the validity of the analysis. The agreement between the nonlinear solutions and the experimental results was satisfactory. The nonlinear and the linearized solutions were compared in detail so as to bring out the essential features of the dynamic behavior in both cases. The stability problem was studied also, and a set of stability criteria for the linearized case was formulated in terms of the design and operating parameters of the reducer. In the few sample cases studied, these criteria gave correct qualitative predictions of the stability of the reducer in both the linearized case and the nonlinear case. The flow forces on three typical flowmetering values were determined by experimental measurements (Appendix 2). These results were used in the analytical part of the paper.
