Abstract: The behavior of a doubly symmetric oval ring, with a pair of stiffeners parallel to either the major or minor axis, subjected to a uniform radial load is investigated. It is shown that there exists an optimum placement of the stiffeners which minimizes the maximum bending stress. Also, it is shown that the common assumption of inextensional deformations leads to gross physical errors, especially when applied to those cases in which stiffeners are placed near the extremities of the oval. In such cases, the extensional deformations in both ring and stiffener play a crucial role which cannot be neglected.
