Abstract: Vibration analysis of long, thin cylindrical shells rotating about their longitudinal axes is presented. It is shown that only traveling waves may be excited in a rotating shell. Furthermore, coriolis and centrifugal accelerations may have significant effects on the natural wave speeds of forward and backward-traveling waves. Numerical results are presented for a case which includes an external torque acting on the ends of the shell.
