Editorial to Introduce the Special Edition on Computational Fluid Dynamics

Abstract

On April 28, 2010, a oneday symposium on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to honor Professor D. B. Spalding, the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Medal in Mechanical Engineering, was held at Villanova University, just outside Philadelphia. The morning sessions focused on the history of CFD and included presentations by Frank Harlow (by video) (Ret., Los Alamos National Laboratory), Grأ©tarTryggvason (RPI), Akshai Runchal (ACRi, Inc.), Luigi Martinelli (Princeton), and Spalding himself. In the afternoon, the focus on stateoftheart and future of CFD included speakers Charles Taylor (Stanford), Philip Marcus (Berkeley), Jayathi Murthy (Purdue, now UT, Austin), and Thomas Gatski (Universitأ© de Poitiers). Afternoon topics spanned length and time scales from planetary science to the nanoscale, and from the intimately physical (CFD in Cardiovascular Systems) to the decidedly abstract (Modeling and Probing Turbulent Flows with CFD).
