The Influence of Residual Rolling Stresses on the Strength of Cylindrical Pressure Vessels Under External Loading

Abstract: The residual stresses induced by cold-rolling flat plate to a cylindrical shell are investigated for initially elastic, perfectly plastic materials. Expressions for the nonlinear stress-strain curves induced by the residual stresses that are effective in the rolled condition are derived by theory. By means of the effective stress-strain curves reductions in the collapse pressure of cylindrical pressure vessels formed by rolling are calculated.
