Abstract: The effectiveness of limestone and dolomite in removing SO2 from flue gas can be estimated by thermochemical calculations. Based on the most likely chemical reactions, both lime and magnesia are shown to be suitable for removing SO2 from hot flue gas, with lime more suitable than magnesia over the temperature range where furnace conditions and reaction kinetics are likely to be favorable.
