Abstract: In this paper, the chatter vibration occurring in a boring bar is treated theoretically and experimentally, and the concrete means for the prevention of chatter are examined from two points of view. First, the effectiveness of the Lanchester damper is investigated and a way of designing the optimum damper is suggested. It may be inevitable that the boring bar has directional characteristics in vibrational properties. It is shown, secondly, that the chatter behaviour can be improved through the good use of the directional characteristics of the boring bars.
