Abstract: The problem considered is that of minimizing the weight of a circular disk subject to specified behavioral and side constraints. The behavioral constraints have been restricted to a consideration that the lowest natural frequency of vibration should exceed a specified resonance frequency while the side constraints impose restrictions on the dimensions and tolerances of the disk. The problem has been formulated as a nonlinear programming problem characterized by a “black box” type representation for the frequency calculations. This paper includes a description of the synthesis procedures used together with a discussion of results.
