On the Behavior of Notched Struts

Abstract: A theoretical buckling load for a strut with a single-edge notch at its mid point is calculated assuming that the effect of the notch is to produce a discontinuity in the slope of the strut. This buckling load is not likely to be reached if the material of the strut is at all brittle and it is shown that the fracture load can be calculated from the critical stress intensity factor of the material. Some justification to the theoretical treatment is obtained from the analysis of previous experimental results.
