| description abstract | This paper describes a technique for improving turbine aerodynamic performance which has been made practical by advanced computer technology. This technique entails precise control of the blade row spanwise vortex distribution in other than a free-vortex plan in order to prevent excessive corner losses. Background data leading to the investigation of this technique are reviewed. The controlled-vortex technique was verified by a series of tests in a single-stage cold flow test rig. The results of these tests show that the controlled-vortex technique could be successfully applied to substantially improve turbine performance. | |
