Abstract: The special test equipment and procedures developed for the evaluation of ultrashort-time elevated-temperature mechanical properties of materials are described herein. The tensile and high-stress creep data obtained for Haynes N-155 alloy sheet are reported. At rapid strain rates, the high-temperature tensile strengths were up to 300 per cent higher than those obtained at conventional testing speeds. At high temperatures and high stress levels, however, creep rates were shown to be extremely rapid, and in most cases, the creep strength became a critical factor. The application of rapid-strain-rate tensile data and high-stress creep data in short-life designs is discussed.
