An Analysis of the Bauschinger Effect in Some Engineering Alloys

Abstract: A simple relationship between the stress-strain curves during initial and reversed loading is shown to approximate closely the shape of hysteresis loops for several materials and test temperatures. This relationship is derived from the assumption of homogeneous total strain and a model of slip based upon reversible, long-range interactions of dislocations, which is equivalent to kinematic strain hardening on a microscopic scale. The alternative assumption of homogeneous stress predicts behavior not in agreement with experimental results.
