Abstract: To explore the feasibility of “oil-free” pressworking, we investigated the effects on the life of SKD11 steel dies and the quality of phosphor bronze workpieces under lubricated and unlubricated or dry conditions. In addition, the performance of SKD11 dies coated with TiN as well as cemented tungsten carbide dies were also examined under dry conditions. Results show that the life of unlubricated SKD11 dies is about half of that under lubricated conditions. The cemented tungsten carbide die gives superior die life and workpiece quality even under dry use conditions.
