Abstract: This paper discusses the factors which influence the airflow through the cylinder heads, and valves, on high-output, medium-speed diesel engines and the techniques used to achieve a high specific airflow. Descriptions of the methods used to flow test cylinder head ports are given, together with details of polynomial cam design. The results of some tests with a variable-timing camshaft, showing the effect of advance of exhaust-valve opening point, are included.
