Abstract: A method is outlined for determining the critical wind velocity, natural frequency, and approximate maximum amplitude of vibration of tall heater stacks and process towers caused by vortex shedding of the wind. A plot of Strouhal number for a range of Reynolds numbers above 105 is presented for application to large-diameter stacks. Calculations for an existing stack are presented, and methods of damping vibrations are discussed.
