An Empirical Equation for the Strain-Rate Effect on Roll Separating Force in Cold Rolling

Abstract: While decreases in roll separating force with increasing speeds in cold rolling have been noted in many instances, their recording has been primarily qualitative. In order to proceed eventually to a firm understanding of this phenomenon, quantitative analyses are needed. Work is presented here on the formulation of an empirical equation describing the strain-rate phenomenon. As noted previously, the effect varies with reduction, and its rate of change diminishes as large strip speeds are approached. The derived equation is correlated with other experimental work and, in general, good agreement is reached.
