Abstract: The explicit representation of knowledge in knowledge-based analysis tools may help designers by improving the nature of their interaction with the tools. This work shows how meta-level inference makes knowledge-based architectures feasible for building engineering analysis tools, particularly in the field of dynamics. Meta-level inference improves performance and makes control knowledge explicit so that it may be more easily understood by humans than if it were embedded in domain knowledge. Also shown are some methods which further improve the performance of meta-level representation and its ability to represent control knowledge.
