Abstract: A short pulse of pressure or volume flux can be changed in magnitude by sending it through a tapered tube. However, both the geometry of the taper and viscous shear cause the pulse to become distorted. In this paper a method of analysis is developed which allows the distortion to be quantitatively determined for pulses that are transmitted through viscous liquids. Viscous shear is shown to round the leading and trailing edges of the pulse, and geometry causes the top of the pulse to be sloped if it is initially flat.
