Abstract: In orthogonal machining experiments on copper and aluminum in which chemical reagents were applied to the work surfaces and allowed to dry completely before cutting, it was found that tool forces and chip morphology were greatly altered depending on the nature of the reagent and work material. The results are discussed with special emphasis on the difference in results observed in copper and aluminum.
