Abstract: This paper presents a computer-based procedure for the optimum design of gear systems which selects the basic gear parameters to provide the best balance between the meshing elements for strength, surface durability, wear resistance and surface temperature. The emphasis is on the selection of the number of teeth in the different gears which provide the specified transmission ratio and maximize the load-carrying capacity of the system with special attention to the minimization of the maximum contact temperature.
