Abstract: The Space Station, as an integral part of the Space Transportation System, utilizes man in space to enhance system effectiveness and operations productivity. As a permanent facility, the Space Station must meet evolving requirements over its virtually unlimited life. The presence of man enables the expansion of capabilities and the orderly incorporation of advancing technologies. This paper addresses systems technology and operations requirements as driven by performance sensitivities relative to technology improvements. The implications of space station growth (both size and capability) and the need to “design in” the ability to accept growth is addressed. From these assessments, recommendations of the level of technology desired for incorporation into the initial station and in later growth phases are discussed.
