Abstract. Very large floating structures (VLFS) typically consist of several connected modules and connectors. The layout of floating modules and connector types will influence the motion responses and mooring forces, which are crucial for engineering design. This article established a model of a serially connected box-type floating structure with a four-point mooring system. Based on the potential-flow theory, this article investigated the effect of module numbers and connector types on six degrees-of-freedom (DOF) motion responses and mooring forces. The results indicated that increasing the module number could reduce the surge motion of the structure, but it also increased the risk of resonance in pitch motion, the recommended module number ranged from 3 to 5. The shielding effect of the front floating modules reduced not only the motion response but also the natural frequencies of the rear modules. Ball/socket connectors significantly increased the mooring forces of the multi-module floating system. The findings of this study will provide a scientific basis for the layout design of multi-module VLFS systems.
