Abstract. Compressed CO2 energy storage (CCES) presents a viable alternative to compressed air energy storage (CAES), offering distinct advantages. However, the storage of low-pressure CO2 poses a notable challenge. We have developed an innovative transcritical adsorption-based CCES system (A-CCES) to address this issue effectively. This system utilizes an adsorption tower to store low-pressure CO2 postenergy release through the adsorption process. The desorption of CO2 is facilitated by heat from compression, allowing the adsorption tower to function as both a low-pressure gas storage unit and a thermal reservoir. Unlike traditional CCES systems, our approach resolves the low-pressure storage challenge without significantly increasing costs. This study explores the thermal management and operational methodologies of the adsorption tower. Results reveal a temperature/adsorption front within the tower, with superficial gas velocities spanning 0.65–1.7 m/s and a stable front measuring between 0.72 and 1.41 m. Implementing effective thermal management is expected to ensure the consistent progression of the front, thereby stabilizing exhaust temperature and flowrate. The adsorption tank realizes a storage density of 60.5 g/l.
