The choice of suitable pipe material is highly important for successful high-head, long-distance water transmission pipeline endeavors. In this research, four initially selected pipe materials were subjected to a comprehensive evaluation in the framework of an actual project. The fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) is used for an intricate quantitative assessment. An intricate quantitative assessment using the FAHP included plastic-coated steel pipes, ordinary steel pipes, ductile iron pipes, and PCCPs, with respective weight values of 0.300, 0.283, 0.244, and 0.173. This study also scrutinizes crucial factors, including safety, reliability, engineering expenditure, adaptability to topographical and geological conditions, longevity, and construction intricacy. Comprehensive analysis indicated that plastic-coated steel pipes, which are renowned for their safety, dependability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of installation, are the preferred option. The construction of these pipes is convenient and sets a precedent for the innovative application of high-head long-distance plastic-coated steel pipes in high-altitude areas such as Tibet. This study provides an innovative approach to the selection of optimal pipe materials, and provides a valuable guide for engineering design and decision making in similar projects.
