    Abstract
The physical meaning of a correlation-field pattern is explored, and such patterns are shown to be analogous to composite patterns. Correlation fields are used to investigate the relationship of precipitation to mean monthly, 5-day and synoptic pressure-contour patterns over the United States and adjacent areas.
