description abstractThis paper investigates the thermoelastic stability of two bonded half planes consisting of different materials, using a perturbation method. It is found that the conduction of heat across an interface between two dissimilar elastic bodies can cause thermoelastic instabilities within the system. This type of instability has been shown to occur for the case where two frictionless half planes are in contact. The characteristic equation governing the thermoelasticity stability of the two bonded half planes takes the same form as that of the two frictionless half planes, thereby having, qualitatively, the same stability boundaries. The significance of this investigation relates to civil and marine engineering applications in which sandwich or bimetallic plate construction may be applicable.
