description abstractThis paper presents the first attempt of an application of the wavelet theory for the crack identification of structures. As a case study, we consider the crack identification using the wavelet theory for a simply supported beam with a transverse on-edge nonpropagating open crack. A mathematical model of the cracked beam is derived and the wavelet expressions in the space domain are proposed for solution. For comparison purposes, the simply supported cracked beam is solved using both the eigentheory and the wavelet method of analysis. The results show that crack identification via wavelet analysis is accomplished easily whereas it can hardly be detected by the traditional eigenvalue analysis.
