description abstractThis paper presents the derivation of elastic moduli for granular material including the effects of pressure sensitivity and anisotropy. The moduli of a granular medium are derived from a micromechanical approach. The interparticle contact law used for this derivation is of the nonlinear Hertz-Mindlin type. The derived expressions of moduli are evaluated by comparing the predictions with experimental observations from glass beads and sands. Discussion is given on the influence of initial stress on the magnitude and anisotropy of the elastic moduli.
