description abstractUsing the Trefftz initial-stress theory of prestressed solids and applying Hamilton's principle, the governing equation is obtained for small-deflection instability of a column with finite axial compressibility. The equation is solved to obtain an expression for the buckling load, and this equation is compared with those of an existing theory due to Grammel and classical Euler column theory.
