description abstractThis study examines engine and vehicle performance during the UDDS (urban dynamometer driving schedule) driving cycle of a heavy-duty truck. The most important and novel feature of the analysis is the application of a zero-dimensional model for the simulation of the thermodynamic processes on a crank angle degree basis; a considerable differentiation from the usual mean-value modeling approach of past research is thus accomplished, with the ability to provide insight into the relevant engine processes. The simulation covers the behavior of the whole vehicle (tires, suspension, gearbox, driver, etc.) during the cycle, focusing on the prominent engine emissions (soot,
