description abstractA linearized theory of one‐dimensional thermoelastic consolidation is given for a layer of soft soil such as clay. Emphasis is placed on the effects of gravity in the presence of heat‐induced volume changes in both the fluid and solid phases of the soil. An initial value problem is studied numerically for the response to an abrupt change of the surface temperature in a layer of porous soil. Analytical results are also given for sinusoidal variation of surface temperature.
