description abstractA geometric approach is used to obtain an essentially exact solution for the motion of a SDOF elastic‐perfectly plastic oscillator subjected to harmonic excitation. The piecewise linear nature of the restoring force and the periodic nature of the solution are exploited, enabling the problem to be treated in the context of one‐dimensional iterated maps. Response characteristics not presented in earlier works are found, and these characteristics are shown to have a significant influence in the frequency response curves for relatively large amplitude forcing.
