description abstractAn exact general three‐dimensional solution for the stresses and displacements arising in a transversely isotropic material containing a spheroidal cavity with zero body forces, prescribed arbitrary tractions on the surface of the cavity, and vanishing stresses and displacements at infinity is presented. The approach is used to obtain the stress distribution around a spheroidal cavity embedded in a transversely isotropic medium under uniaxial tension in the direction of and perpendicular to the axis of symmetry of the material. Numerical results and the effect of anisotropy on the stress concentration factor are discussed.
