description abstractTo survive, all nations are engaged in a global competition to advance their national welfare in a global economy. Indicators and factors conducive to the diminishing technological leadership of the United States in this competition are presented and discussed. The importance of education in the global economy is then described with particular emphasis on the preparation of a U.S. engineer capable of competing with his foreign counterparts. To regain the technological edge, efforts of the educational system, the government, the private industry, and individuals are described, and recommendations to further correct the gap between the U.S. engineer and the world engineer are presented.
