description abstractComplex structures represent assemblages of distributed components such as beams, columns, etc. A method capable of modeling complex structures is the finite element method. The resulting discrete model generally possesses a large number of degrees of freedom, and only a given number of lower modes can be computed accurately. This paper shows how to design a reduced‐order controller to control a complex structure during earthquakes.
