description abstractAn elasticity solution is presented for a rectangular orthotropic beam under arbitrary, normal, and shear loading or support conditions, or both. The solution is shown to correlate well with experimental measurements on Sitka spruce. Beam equations for use in design applications are developed for the calculation of bending and shear stresses for orthotropic or isotropic beams under normal and shear loading conditions. The elasticity solution examines the validity of the equations.
