description abstractA computational algorithm based upon a strain‐space formulation of plasticity is tested for accuracy in the case of perfect plasticity. A new strategy for updating the position of the relaxation surface is presented and compared with other strategies employed in stress‐space. The algorithm is coupled with a finite element program and used to investigate the response of a vertically loaded foundation resting on an elastic half‐space. The results are compared to those obtained using an accepted stress‐space algorithm.
