description abstractA new method is suggested to obtain approximate explicit expressions for the dynamic stiffness of rigid foundations on the surface of layered media. The method uses the dynamic stiffness matrices for layered media to compute the surface displacements due to two assumed stress distributions under the foundation and applies weighted residuals to obtain an optimum combination of the two solutions. Comparison with more rigorous “exact” solutions and some approximate methods shows the accuracy of the new method that is computationally very efficient.
