description abstractA powerhouse cavern in the Himalaya has been analyzed using the finite element method under various stages of excavation. A constitutive model based on disturbed state concept has been used to depict the strain softening behavior of the rock mass. The material parameters for the rock mass have been determined from the tests on the intact rock samples from the field. The behavior of the cavern is presented and discussed. The instrumentation used to study the behavior of the cavern during excavation is presented. The predicted and observed behavior of the cavern are compared. It is shown that the predictions are satisfactory.
