description abstractApproximate formulas for attenuation of peak depth and discharge during flood wave propagation are derived from an approximate solution of the Saint Venant equations corresponding to flood peak. When limited data are available, these formulas can be used to perform a quick forecast of flood peak stage and discharge at the downstream section of a river. The formulas were verified by forecasting flood peak in three river reaches; and their accuracy was satisfactory.
