description abstractMany problems face engineering education today. Among them are the four‐year program, faculty, and the preparation of graduates for the practice of engineering. Proposed solutions have been addressed in the recent report of the ASCE Task Committee on Education and the subsequent implementation of the goals and action plans. One solution to the current dilemma is the proposal for a professional school of engineering, an autonomous body within the university, dedicated to producing a graduate who is properly prepared to enter the practice of engineering. The cost for realizing such a program would be a partnership of the educational institution, government, and industry.
