description abstractThe American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) held conferences on the education of civil engineers in 1974 and 1979, and is planning for the next one in 1985. The 1979 conference is summarized and assessed in detail. Engineers, employers, and educators may find the changes, problems, and opportunities in civil engineering education of interest and concern. The 1979 conference was concerned with basic programs; professional development including post‐baccalaureate programs, courses, and teaching methods; and the universality of a civil engineering education. There are changes, opportunities, and problems taking place.
