description abstractThis paper describes the development of a logic based regulation compliance assistance system that builds upon an extensible markup language (XML) framework. First, a document repository containing federal regulations and supplemental documents, and an XML framework for representing regulations and associated metadata are briefly discussed. The prototype effort for the regulation assistance system focuses on federal environmental regulations and related documents. The compliance assistance system is illustrated in the domain of used oil management. The overall objective is to develop a formal infrastructure for regulatory information management and compliance assistance.
