description abstractA computer‐based system for determining water discharges through a network of control structures and canals in the South Florida Water Management District is described. The system comprises a relational data base that provides structure information to a FORTRAN program using structured query language (SQL) statements embedded in the program. Discharge is computed at approximately 250 structures consisting of gated spillways, pump stations, gated culverts, flumes, weirs, and open‐channel sites. By separating the structure information from a previous discharge computation program and placing this information in a data base, the size of the program has been reduced, file maintenance is facilitated, and the freed structure information is available for other district initiatives, thereby reducing redundancy of information.
