description abstractThis note presents the results of a laboratory study on surface hydraulic jumps, which form immediately downstream of sharp-crested rectangular weirs for a certain range of submergence. These surface jumps appear to share some characteristics with classical hydraulic jumps generated in horizontal rectangular flumes. Correlations have been developed for many of their characteristics, in term of the relative submergence, equal to the ratio of the tailwater depth above the weir crest and the head on the weir. This study appears to be the first on surface hydraulic jumps.
