description abstractThe collapse resistance of steel columns subjected to combined axial and reversed lateral loading is investigated computationally. Detailed finite-element models that are validated using available experimental data are presented. Simulation results using these models suggest that local buckling as well as lateral torsional buckling in deep, slender sections under combined axial and lateral loading can lead to a substantial reduction in column ductility. The results of an extensive parametric study suggest that the current design guidelines are potentially unconservative and are used to develop a simple-to-use design aid.
