description abstractAn analysis to determine the frequency of occurrence of gradients in reflectivity has been performed. Gradients as large as 50 dB km?1 occur with a frequency of over 1% of the pairs of adjacent nonzero reflectivities at ranges <32 km. At greater ranges, the observed gradients are less because of angular resolution of the radar. Considerable care must be taken in interpreting storm reflectivities if the logarithm of intensity or logarithm of power is averaged.
