description abstractVertical profiles of the horizontal radial wind component in the lowest kilometer of the atmosphere have been measured remotely with lidar. Wind speed determinations were made by observing the motion of naturally occurring aerosol density inhomogeneities. Lidar wind measurements compare favorably with simultaneous pilot balloon observations of the wind.
